# Life's Obstacles
Lately I've been thinking about how people see obstacles in life. There’s a quote by Simon Sinek (one of my favorite public speakers) that stuck with me:
> “Some people see the thing they want. Others see the thing that prevents them from getting it.”
For a while I didn’t fully understand what that meant. It's such a simple quote but the reality of it just never hit me until recently.
## Good Pizza & Long Lines
Once a month this pizza truck shows up near my apartment. It’s really good pizza. The kind you think about all day. That day I had already decided I was getting one. In fact, I went to bed the night before thinking about how awesome tomorrow was going to be because the pizza truck was coming.
When I got home and walked over, there was a long line. It was cold outside and people were wrapped around the truck waiting their turn. But the line didn’t bother me. In fact, I don’t even remember thinking about it. All I cared about was getting my pizza.
While I was walking back to my apartment with my pizza, I overheard a couple talking about the line. They had decided not to get one because the wait was too long. That’s when it hit me. I only saw the pizza. They only saw the line. Same situation. Completely different perspective.
## Where This Shows Up in Life
I realized I do this in other parts of my life too. Sometimes I focus too much on the line being the difficulty, the complexity, the things that might get in the way.
I’ve been studying machine learning this past year, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by how deep the field goes. There’s a lot of theory behind it and sometimes it feels like there’s an endless amount to learn.
But when I think about that pizza truck, it reminds me of something simple. If you really want the pizza, you stand in line. You just stay there until your turn comes and get your pizza.
## Staying in Line
Learning difficult things works the same way. The line is the confusing math. The line is reading code you don’t fully understand. The line is slow progress **but none of that changes the goal.**
Sometimes I still catch myself staring at the line instead of focusing on the pizza. But recognizing that is helpful. It reminds me that the obstacles aren’t the point. The point is the thing on the other side of them.
And if it’s something you truly want, you just stay in line long enough to get it.
